Zion National Park, Utah

Zion Valley
Zion National Park lies in the southwest corner of Utah.  The valley (left) was carved over the eons by the Virgin River which courses through the most popular part of the park.  Although the park itself is gigantic, the most frequented portion is the valley, for obvious reasons.  One of the more prominent features is the Watchman, who towers over the entrance to the park and its more popular campgrounds (below).
The Watchman
Zion is an acrophobe's nightmare, with high canyon walls and trails with sheer drops.  Nukeboy ponders the universe from a perch high up on the Watchman (below).

Because of the height of the canyon walls and the shape of the valley, any trail that seeks to reach the rim must make use of switchbacks.  Of the more impresive engineering triumphs, is Walter's Wiggles, switchbacks named for its creator (above).  The Wiggles are on the trail to Angels' Landing, from which the photo at top was taken.
The area was settled in the mid 1800's by Mormons.  The building below is one of two left of Grafton.  The residents were massacred in later years by marauding indians.
