and her 6 month old baby Maja
Letter from the Program Coordinator
Dear
Tutors, Students and Center Directors, With a great
regret I'd like to inform you that as of September 1,
2002 I will no longer hold the position of the Program
Coordinator for the Literacy Council. After much deliberation,
I decided to devote myself fully to my family and my
children. The three years of working for all of you
have been a fascinating experience: both on a professional
and personal level. I made a lot of friends and I think
I became a part of the big literacy circle. I still
feel very strongly about the idea we have been sharing
for all this time. I will still support the efforts
of the Council by continuing tutoring and training on
the volunteer basis: so hopefully I will see you around.
Thank you all for teaching me so much about life, people
and myself.
With my warmest regards,
Monika Phillips

Center Director, Valerie Schneider.
A
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Happy
20th Anniversary Literacy Council of San Luis Obispo
County!
Our celebration on September 8th was a fun-filled
afternoon. The P.G. & E. Community Center was the
perfect venue for our gathering. The poster created
by our own Ilsa Brink, of our board of directors,
center directors and staff depicted as Elizabethan
characters, became quite the conversation piece.
The movie house snacks fit the bill and the memorabilia
sparked much interest. Everyone had fun participating
in the trivia contests with the star prize being
a handmade quilt by our own Monika Phillips. The
film was delightful entertainment for such a special
occasion. Congratulations to Shirley Miller of Nipomo,
Jane Scanland of San Luis Obispo, Linda Olson of
Los Osos, Bobbie Planansky of Cayucos, Roy Champagne
of Paso Robles, Virginia Gardenhire of Cambria and
Rosalee Calvillo of Grover Beach for winning tutor
of the year awards.
The highlight of the afternoon was the naming of
the recipient of the lifetime achievement award.
A well-deserved round of applause was given to Jan
Breidenbach. The award is named the Jan Breidenbach
Lifetime Achievement Award- and justly so. Almost
twenty years ago, Jan began with the Literacy Council
as a volunteer tutor. After several years as a tutor,
she took on the responsibility of center director,
more than six years ago she was elected to the board-
while still working as a center director-, and today
continues on the board as treasurer, a position
she has held for nearly four years. Many kudos and
thanks to Jan for her commitment to literacy and
our organization. The staff and I would like to
again thank everyone who attended. For those who
had to miss it, weıve included, in this newsletter,
some much-appreciated comments from attendees. |
We
will be again partnering with the Friends of the
San Luis Obispo Library for the Chocolate Suite
Affaire. The fund raising event for both the Literacy
Council and the Friends of the Library will be held
at the Jack House, San Luis Obispo, in the afternoon
of Sunday October 13, 2002 from 2:00 until 5:00.
Tickets are $20.00 and available through our office.
Please come to this enjoyable event- a really delicious
way to support literacy.
On June 10th our council had the honor of a personal
visit from Dr. Bob Laubach. Son of the founder of
the "each one teach one" method, Bob continues
to work for Laubach International as a spokesman
for the organization. We held a luncheon for him
where he had the opportunity to visit with board
members, past and present volunteers and staff.
Our founders, Betty Kirk and Lyn Vivrette, also
attended. The next day he visited our San Luis Obispo
day center at the 1st Presbyterian Church where
he met several tutors and learners and voiced how
impressed he was by what he saw. As you have already
read in her letter to you, Monika Phillips, our
program coordinator for the last three plus years,
is moving on. For any that know her, it is an understatement
to say she will be sorely missed. Our consolation
is that she promises not to disappear. Those of
us that have worked with her on a daily basis will
miss her sense of humor, quick wit, and warm camaraderie.
Weıve been blessed by her presence- the teams of
Sheila, then Marcie, Ilsa, Monika and me worked
very well for the Literacy Council. As any team,
we will persevere; inspired by the team member that
has created so much fine work and so many dear memories.
This newsletter includes our annual report- to all
of you that are involved in our work-congratulations
for another amazing year. One need only compare
the hours and numbers of volunteers and tutors with
our budget to know that each of you makes miracles
happen. Thank you all and best wishes for another
rewarding year with the Literacy Council of San
Luis Obispo County.
Gratefully,
Bernadette Bernardi

Those
Special Ones Among Us . . .
Those
Special Ones Among Us . . .
Gudrun
Grell of the Grover Beach Learning Center retired
earlier this summer. She, like a few other tutors,
represents a very special group among us- a non-native
speaker who tutors English as a Second Language.
Gudrun is a native of Copenhagen, Denmark. She came
to the USA in 1949. She took a tutor training 6
years ago, because she believes everybody has the
right to learn the language of the country they
choose to live in. Gudrun herself speaks several
languages and she knows what a challenge it is.
She would like for all the beginning students to
realize that learning a foreign language is a slow
and tiring process, not the one in which dramatic
leaps take place. For all new tutors her advice
is to encourage the students to stick to learning
through the challenging times. ³And please, don't
take it personally, if your student drops out. It's
not your fault. The learners are simply overworked
at times and too tired to learn², said Gudrun whom
we'll miss dearly at the Grover Beach center. All
Gudrunıs students confirmed she is a very special
lady and they all would like to join us in our expression
of gratitude. Thank you, Gudrun.
Literacy Tutor Recognized by the Community
In the previous issue of the newsletter we profiled
a retiring tutor, Marian Middleton of Grover Beach.
Not coincidentally, her 19-year long devoted service
to the Literacy Council has been also appreciated
by the community of our county. Marian was awarded
a special plaque given annually by the Equal Opportunity
Commission at their special Volunteer Recognition
Event. Mrs. Middleton represented the Council with
pride and a little bit of nostalgia. Once again,
Thank you, Marian. |
CONGRATULATIONS!
There is nothing more rewarding for a tutor than
to see their student climbing up the educational
ladder and pursuing opportunities which seemed impossible
when the two met for the first time. Thatıs what
all the tutors are working so hard for, and thatıs
why many students come to the Literacy Council seeking
help. Cases of an amazing learnerıs progress as
a fruit of devotion and a mutual belief are therefore
the most delightful news we could share with our
community. Congratulations both to the learners
and their tutors: Cirila Nunez was accepted to the
Cuesta College (North Campus) ESL classes level
1. She has been working for over a year with Karen
Reamer, a tutor of the Paso Robles Learning Center.
Regina Foster's student, Maria Toribio became a
Psychiatric Technician at the Atascadero State Hospital.
Maria graduated from the Cuesta College (North Campus)
Health Technician Program. Regina Foster, an independent
tutor from Paso Robles, has tutored Maria for 6
months. Student Yulia Estelle was accepted to the
Cuesta College (North Campus) ESL classes level
4. Before Yulia became a first time mom, she was
working for almost a year with Monika Phillips,
an independent tutor from Los Osos.

NEWS
FROM THE CENTER
STORY HOUR IN ATASCADERO
In June the Atascadero
Learning Center, under the leadership of Susan
Needleman-Brown, concluded its tutoring year 2001-2002
with a great evening of learning and fun. The
students invited their youngsters and other family
members for the story hour, highlighting the LITERACY
5 program for parents of children five and younger.
All parent-learners participating in the program
read out loud and made their kids very proud!
We had also two fantastic presentations from the
children themselves. Jeorge and Rosa Lopez's son,
and a daughter of Ana Barragan read the stories
which their moms had first learned to read at
the center. The books for the families were funded
by PROP 10. The stress of reading in front of
the audience was soon alleviated by chitchat over
a delicious summer buffet prepared by the tutors
and their Center Director.
SPECIAL
APPEAL FROM SOME CENTERS
On behalf of Liz Curren, the Center Director in
Los Osos, and new directors: Valerie Schneider
in Paso Robles, and Carol Dykstra in Nipomo, we
would like to use the literacy grapevine to spread
the word: those centers are in a SPECIAL NEED
for volunteers. The Nipomo and Paso Robles Centers
have the longest waiting lists. The Los Osos Center
quite regularly is inundated with large groups
of students. Here is our appeal to all active
and retired tutors: if you know of anyone living
in these areas, who would be interested in volunteering
for the Literacy Council, please recruit them
for us. The more the merrier and your help with
finding new tutors will be highly appreciated.
Please pass around our contact number: 541-4219.

20th
Anniversary Celebration
Dear
Literacy Council Friends, Wow! What a fete you put on
last Sunday! Thank you so much for the labor of love
you put into the event. You made all of us feel very
special. Everything was so wonderfully planned--from
the clever invitations, decorations, displays...and
all that food! My gosh, you fed us from the moment we
walked in the door to the time we walked out. The door
prize recipients sure were lucky--especially the winner
of Monica's incredible quilt! It was a lovely, lovely
day thanks to the hard work of many people. You put
Much Ado into making us feel very much appreciated.
Sincerely, Linda Olson, Los Osos
I just want to say thank you for a delightful Sunday
afternoon. Congratulations to you and your staff and
your Board for a very successful turnout event to celebrate
20 years of SLO Literacy Council. I so enjoyed seeing
and talking with people I had not seen in a long time.
Kudos to you, for keeping this wonderful organization
so vibrant.
Renee Heller
You did an unbelievable job planning, organizing, and
hosting the party. Thanks so much for all the goodies
and the opportunity to get together. I'm proud to be
part of the Literacy Council!
Donna Sullivan
Thank you, Bernadette, Monika, Marcie and Ilsa for a
beautiful celebration on Sunday afternoon. I heard so
many wonderful comments about everything. The graphics
were fantastic, Ilsa! You all did an incredible job
of planning a memorable afternoon! Kudos to you all!
