We have been to Joshua Trees twice, once in 1991 when it was a national monument and the summer after it was expanded and became a national park with the October 1994 California Desert Protection Act. I only wrote about our first trip. Our initial visit was on the way back from our first trip to Anza-Borrego State Park in the spring of 1991. Entering Joshua Trees from the south through the flat, low Sonoran Desert, we kept asking each other: "Where are the Joshua trees?" Then we were suddenly climbing into the transition zone between the Sonoran and Mojave deserts. It remains one of the most visually memorable moments of my life. The terrain immediately became rocky. There were Joshua trees everywhere I looked. We returned for a longer stay and explored a lot of the old mining areas added to the park. It is time for us to return. |
