One of the biggest and most surprisingly beautiful state parks, Anza-Borrego combines a vast desert to explore and rich Western history.

We've been there three times, but only written about our first trip, an overview of the park and a bit of history about some of its characters. We have to scan in some photos to show you.

On our last visit, Mary woke up just in time to hear a rock tumble down Indian Point near the Palm Canyon Campground. She grabbed the binoculars and spotted a family of Borrego rams climbing down the mountain and heading for a morning drink in the Palm Canyon oasis. Rangers who've been there for decades told us how lucky we were since many of them have never seen one of the shy creatures.

Since writing this, we've visited a Mormon museum in San Diego to learn more about the Mormon battalion. I've left the inaccurate and incomplete information here because it is what I wrote based on what I learned in the park. I'll change it when I find some book worth reading about the battalion.
