Arrival at Hilo, Waterfalls & the 4th of July!

Here we are arriving in Hawaii. We all got "lei'd" on our arrival. After picking up a van and car at the car rental facility, we headed out under cloudy skies to our Hilo accomodations at Uncle Billys. This is a view of the courtyard our patios overlooked.

After we got settled in our rooms we did a sightseeing tour of several nearby falls. The first one we viewed was Rainbow Falls, shown below:

Then we have to stand here at the lookout so you'll know we actually were there!

A short drive further on brought us to a viewing spot of Pe'ePe'e Falls. In the distance shot you can a swimmer standing on a rock above the pool in the center of the picture.

The next falls we visited required a long steep hike to get a viewing spot. Roundtrip from parking lot to Akaka Falls, then Kahuna Falls and back up the narrow trail was about 5 miles. Akaka falls is shown in the first 2 pictures, the third is Kahuna falls. It was beginning to rain by the time we reached Kahuna falls, and had become a downpour by the time we reached the parking lot again.

Back in the hotel room, Danielle tries on Renee's shoes and is sporting her new skirt which she had picked out during our shopping excursion in Hilo.

Other little guests of the hotel are the tiny geckos. Here's one visiting a dish on the patio:

Fourth of July fireworks were set off over Hilo Bay, and our patio conveniently had a great view of the bay. Click the firecrackers on either side of the picture of Hilo Bay to see and hear some fireworks. The fireworks video clips were taken by Renee' from our patio.
