I'm standing just in front of the location where the host of our little crystal-digging expedition, my nephew Chris, and his friend Andy, have found a vein of crystals. There's nothing about this mound of dirt that gives a clue as to the beautiful crystalline structures buried beneath.
Andy has dug a trench into this part of the earth and located the vein of crystals which he's pointing to.
A little more digging and Andy had a handful of clear, hexagonal crystals, some of which are shown here.
Digging from the other side of the vein, Chris has uncovered an even larger outgrowth of crystals.
After a bit of chopping on this side of the vein, Jim excavated the chunk of crystals growing out of the quartz rock shown below. This beautiful specimen now resides in my antique display case.
The magnificent clump of crystals shown below in a top view with the side view below it, measuring approximately 7" x 7" was excavated by Chris from a previous dig.
