Installing the Dialup Software for PPP use and Windows 95 may seem
to be a major task for some, but if you follow the steps below
correctly you should have it up and running in no time! Of course,
if you need further assistance please send mail to
help@surfari.net
or call our office at 473-6525 or (800) 994-6525 and we will assist you.
1. Make Sure Your Modem is Working Properly
Your modem MUST be correctly installed and configured in Windows
95 for the Dial-Up networking to function. A good test is to see
if you can use the modem with Hyperterminal. Testing the modem
with your old DOS or Windows 3.1 software will not tell you if
the modem is configured correctly, as these programs do not access
the modem through the Win95 device drivers.
2. Do You Have Dial-Up Networking Installed?
Press the START button on the menu bar. Select Settings
Control
Panel. Double click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
Click on the Windows Setup tab. Click on the Communications
option and then press Details. If Dial-Up Networking does
not have a check mark, click on it and then press OK. Windows
will attempt to install the driver from your Windows 95 CD or
floppy disks. If Dial-Up Networking IS checked, then it is already
installed and you can simply click OK.
3. Is Your Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP installed?
Press the START button, select Settings
Control
Panel. Double click the Network icon. Click on the
Settings tab. If Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP are both present
you may click OK and proceed to the next step.
If Dial-Up adapter is not present, click the Add button.
Double click on Adapter. Select Microsoft, then
Dial-Up Adapter, then hit OK.
If TCP/IP is not present, click the Add button. Double
click on Protocol. Select Microsoft, then TCP/IP,
then OK.
If you have had to install either of the above drivers, you will
need to bind the protocol to the adapter. From the Network box,
select the Dial-Up Adapter. Click on Properties
Bindings,
and make sure the TCP/IP box is checked.
4. Now, Let's Set Up a Surfari.Net Icon.
Open up "My Computer" on your desktop. Double
click on the Dial-Up Networking icon. Double click the
Make New Connection icon.
It will ask you for the name of the connection. Enter- "SurfariNet" -(no quotes).
Make sure your modem is selected in the "Select a Modem"
box. Then click the Configure button. Click on the Options
tab. Make sure the box marked "Bring up terminal window
after dialing" is not checked. This will allow you to
automatically log in. Then hit the OK button.
Click the Next> button. Enter the number you were given
to access Surfari.Net in the appropriate box. Click the Next>
button, then the Finish button.
Highlight the icon you just created. Right-click on it and select
Properties. Click the button marked Server Type.
Make sure PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet is
selected in the Type of Dial-Up Server. Here are the rest
of the settings:
Log onto Network: Off
Enable Software Compression: On
Require Encrypted Password: Off
NetBEUI: Off
IPX/SPX Compatible: Off
TCP/IP: On
Now click the button marked TCP/IP Settings. Here are the
settings:
Server assigned IP address SHOULD be checked.
Specify name server addresses should be checked.
Primary DNS: 207.114.135.2
Secondary DNS: 207.114.135.3 (or leave it blank)
"Use IP header compression box should be checked"
and
"Use default gateway on remote network should be checked"
The rest should be left as it is. Click OK. Click OK.
Click OK. (Yes, three different OK buttons, or only two
different OK buttons if you have the "newer" Dial-Up Networking.)
That's it. Configuration is done. When you double click on the
SurfariNet icon, your computer will dial and connect to Surfari.Net.
When it has, a window will open for you to enter your username and
password. Then you have done that, click the CONTINUE button and
you are connected. Alternatively, you can use dial-up scripts with
Windows 95. There is help for this from the User Services page as well.
