- You will need a SSH Telnet program to
change your password on the server. If you do not feel comfortable in doing
this, just give us a call in the office (during normal office hours) and
we'll change it for you.
- To change your password, you must Login to the Surfari Internet
server using a Secure Shell (SSH) Telnet program. You can obtain one
of these programs from our local FTP Site by clicking HERE or obtaining one from a file
download or commercial site.
You may also click HERE
to learn more about telneting with a Secure Shell (SSH) program.
-
A standard Telnet program will not work, you need one with the SSH
capabilities built in.
Logginging into Surfari
Internet's Server
1. Dialup and Establish a login session with Surfari Internet:
- First, connect to Surfari in the same manner as you usually do with
your dial up connection.
- Once you established a succesful connection, you can start your
SSH Telnet program.
*Note - in most cases you will have your browser running at the same time,
it will not cause any problems.
- When your start your SSH Telnet program it will ask you for a
connection name or host name. You will want to type in
surfari.net.
- Your SSH Telnet program should then try to establish a login
session with our server.
- If you get a successful connection, you will be presented with a basic
screen (similar to the old DOS C:\> prompt style) that looks like this:
Surfari Internet Provider Services
(805) 473-6525 / (800) 994-6525
login:.
- In most cases you have a cursor flashing right in front of the
login:
waiting for your input as shown above.
- Enter your Surfari Internet account name (i.e. jdoe).
After typing it in, hit the (Enter or Return) key on your keyboard.
- You will then be asked for a password from another "prompt" like this
password:.
Enter your current Surfari password for your account. After typing
your password, hit the (Enter or Return) key. If you entered both your
account name and password correctly, you will be 'logged' onto the
Surfari Internet server and be presented with a menu something like this:
Main Menu
1) General Information About Surfari Internet
2) Download Internet Access Software
3) Read/Write Electronic Mail
4) Read Newsgroups (takes a minute to load)
5) Surf the WWW with Lynx (Text Browser)
6) Change Your Password
7) Change Your Finger Info

0) Who's on the Server?
C) Change Your Default Shell
q) Quit (Leave the Menu/Log Out)
[When viewing documents: hit 'SPACE' to move down a page,

Enter Choice :
- If you do not have this menu displayed, type in the word surfmenu
and hit ENTER.
2. Change your password for your account on Surfari Internet:
- At the Enter Choice: location (where your cursor is waiting for
input) type in the number 6 (for Change your password) and hit the
(Return or Enter) key.
- You will then be asked to enter your current password, type it in
and hit your (Return or Enter) key.
- You will see a new "prompt" asking you for a New password,
type in the new password you want to use and hit the (Return or Enter)
key. Keep in mind that it must be between 4 and 8 characters (any
combination of letters, numbers, and printable keyboard symbols). Also,
the password is "case-sensitive", which means a capital C is different
than a lower-case c.
- It will now ask you to enter the new password one more time, type it in
the same as you just did and hit the (Return or Enter) key.
- If the process was successful you will get a message and then be prompted
to hit a key to return to the Surfari Menu.

- To leave the Surfari Menu and close your telnet session, type q
(that's "q" for quit) and then hit the (Return or Enter) key, which will
allow you to quit. You'll be asked if you are sure, just hit the
(Return or Enter) key to exit. (If you had to start the menu manually,
you'll also have to type 'logout' or 'exit' at the prompt)
4. Final Concerns:
- VERY IMPORTANT - You have just changed your password for
your account on Surfari Internet. You will now have to change your password
in all of your programs that you use to access your account on Surfari as
well.
- If you disconnect now and try to re-connect, your access will be
refused because your dialer program is presenting the old password to the
system. You will need to restart your dialer program and type in the new
password. Be advised that the dialer program will *not* update this
password until you successfully re-connect to Surfari Internet. Give it a
try to be sure you still have access to the system.
- You will also have to change the password for your E-Mail program in order
to gain access to your E-Mail.
- For Help with this, please refer to our user help pages on Surfari
Internet located at Surfari User Help. And of course, if you have any
problems, call us at the office at (805) 473-6526 or from other areas call
(800) 994-6525.
Good Luck!!!
